The Nonin Onyx pulse oximeter includes the name “NONIN” printed in bold capital letters above the name “Onyx” printed in cursive font. When the battery level is low, the digital displays will blink once per second. It is advertised to operate for at least 1,000 spot-checks or twelve hours of continuous operation before battery replacement is required. The Onyx model is powered by two AAA batteries. The pulse quality signals are rated as ‘good,’ ‘marginal,’ or ‘inadequate’ and are indicated by the pulse quality indicator blinking green, yellow, or red, respectively. When the device detects each pulse, the monitor’s PERFUSION DISPLAY blinks. These values are displayed on light-emitting diode digital displays. This oximeter displays numerical values for the patient’s pulse rate in beats per minute and functional arterial hemoglobin oxygen saturation in percentage. The Onyx model is small and lightweight, which allows patients to carry the device with them.
